Ive read so many essay collections, but one that is seeped in the culture and history of New Zealand allows me to see elements of my own story reflected in literary non-fiction. Wake  by Elizabeth Knox A disturbing novel with an excellent cover,  Wake  is about a community who are overcome with insanity, commit mass homicide, and then are left with the gory aftermath. Lewisville by Alexandra Tidswell Based on true events,  Lewisville  is a  historical novel spanning decades and continents. Anchored by a secret, the plot chronicles the reinvention of a young woman and the secrets we keep in order to remake ourselves. Potiki by Patricia Grace The question of ownership is at the heart of every colonised nation. And, it is a question that continues to be debated and discussed in New Zealand politics today. Graces  Potiki  speaks to this question and looks at ownership itself is the land something to be owned? And if so, by who? Tu  by Patricia Grace Named for the  Maori God of War, Tu was a solider in the  Maori Battalion in Italy during World War II.  Tu speaks of  war, survival, brotherhood, and sacrifice. Incidentally, one of Taika Waititi early short films  Tama Tu is about this very Battalion. Hera Lindsay Bird by Hera Lindsay Bird A collection of confessional poetry from young poet Hera Lindsay Bird. In 2016 her poem  Keats Is Dead So Fuck Me From Behind went viral, and in true form the rest of Birds poetry is just as raw and raunchy. Who Was That Woman, Anyway? by Aorewa McLeod A feminist navigation of a male world,  Who Was That Woman, Anyway?  jumps from party to dorm room to classrooms to covens in search of sexual identity and belonging.

Most important here is to make sure your query addresses an issue for which you have passion--it needs to be of personal importance. What is a Moral Dilemma? Unlike a research query, the solution to a moral dilemma is not likely to be found in a library or laboratory. By definition, a moral dilemma is a problem that is difficult to solve because it has no clear, ideal solution. The situation is a dilemma precisely because the different solutions to the problem have pros and cons. Our sense of right and wrong is challenged by a moral dilemma. What if You Didnt Solve the Problem Alone? Its rare that anyone solves a significant problem alone. Perhaps you solved a problem as part of a robotics team or as a member of your student government. Dont try to hide help you received from others in your essay. Many challenges, in both college and the professional world, are solved by teams of people, not individuals. If your essay demonstrates that you have the generosity to acknowledge the contributions of others  and that you are good at collaboration, youll be highlighting positive personal characteristics. A Warning: Dont Address This Problem One of the problems you are currently facing, and one that youd clearly like to solve, is how to get into your top choice colleges. It may seem like a clever choice to spin the question back on itself and write an essay about the application process that currently dominates your life. Such an essay might work in the hands of a truly expert writer, but in general, its a topic to avoid (along with these other bad essay topics). Its an approach others have taken, and the essay is likely to come across as glib rather than thoughtful. A final note:  If you successfully show why your chosen problem is important to you, youre on the right path for a successful essay. If you really explore the why of this question and go easy on the describing, your essay will be on track to succeed. It might help to rethink prompt #4 in these terms: Explain how you grappled with a meaningful problem so that we can get to know you better.  The college looking at your essay has holistic admissions  and really does want to get to know you as an individual.  Aside from an interview, the essay is really the only place in your essay where you can reveal the three-dimensional person behind those grades and test scores.  Use it to display your personality, interests and passions. To test out your essay (whether for this prompt or one of the other options), give it to an acquaintance or teacher who doesnt know you particularly well, and ask what that person learned about you from reading the essay. Ideally, the response will be exa ctly what you want the college to learn about you. Finally, good writing is also important here. Be sure to pay attention to style, tone, and mechanics. The essay is first and foremost about you, but it also needs to demonstrate a strong writing ability.

Do you think that is the case in The Petrified Man? When I think of the south, I think of southern hospitality. I picture people always talking to each other, whether it's just small talk or gossip, which is the case in The Petrified Man. The dialogue itself appears to be pretty accurate (from what I can imagine anyway, since I've never been down south). The south definitely has a certain way of talking and Eudora Welty does a great job showing us, not just telling us, this dialect. From the very first sentence of the story, you know where you are, and the type of people involved in the story. ?Reach in my purse and git me a cigarette without no powder in it if you kin, Mrs. Fletcher, honey ? I don't like no perfumed cigarettes.? As for the events themselves, they appear to be reasonably honest. If you allow yourself to just listen to the story as it's being told, instead of trying to analyze it's validity (it is fiction after all) you will believe you're sitting in Leota's beauty parlor with Mrs. Fletcher and Leota talking about anything or anybody. It doesn't matter exactly what you're talking about, as long as it takes the attention away from your own lives, if just for an hour or two. Although some people might be offended at the gesture that all the women in the south sit around and just talk about everyone else, I think it's accurate. Not just in the south, and not just with women. For some reason, people find comfort in talking about other people's lives and forgetting about theirs for a little while. How do the major characters react to the story that Leota is telling? Do they change or learn anything? I know when I hear a story, I don't look for a moral to incorporate into my life. I just listen to the story and allow myself to be entertained. I believe that's the same with the characters in this story. I don't think they learned anything. Even at the very end of the story when Mrs. Pike's son, Billy Boy, runs out of the beauty parlor and yells ?If you're so smart, why ain't you rich I don't think either Leota or Mrs. Fletcher even understood his point. I think Mrs. Fletcher did change however. At the beginning of the story it seemed that she was irate when she found out her pregnancy was the topic of discussion at the beauty parlor. ?'Who was it?' demanded Mrs. Fletcher.? By the end of the story, once they had talked about everything that had happened to Mrs. Pike and her husband, Mrs. Fletcher felt fine about talking about the pregnancy. ?I guess I better learn how to spank little old bad boys,? as if once the attention was on someone else, she no longer cared about people talking about her pregnancy. Now, in fact, she was talking about it. Do you think the on going theme of the story is? I thought the theme of the story was jealousy. I started thinking about it as soon as Mrs. Fletcher started getting defensive once Leota told her about Mrs. Pike. The more Leota talked about her, the more defensive Mrs. Fletcher got. ?Does she know everything about you already Then all of the sudden, once she found out that Leota and Mrs. Pike had had a falling out, everything was fine. As mentioned before, when Mrs. Fletcher found out Mrs. Pike was the one that told Leota Mrs. Fletcher was pregnant, she was outraged. Mrs. Pike was the one Leota talked to all the time now. She was the one who heard all the stories about everyone in town. She was Leota's new confidant if you will. To prevent from slipping too far down on Leota's friend list, Mrs. Fletcher kept asking questions about Mrs. Pike pretending to be interested. The whole time just waiting for the time when she would mess up. Once she knew that their friendship was over, everything was great. She no longer cared about

It took three years for Jerry Sandusky to e arrested, all the while Aaron had to recount his story over and over and live In torment and fear while Investigators took their time and gathered more evidence. Justice took too long for Aaron and the other vellums of Jerry Sandusky. Just like Jaycee Dastards book, this book too holds a great purpose of awareness. Aaron Fisher and Jaycee Dugan are two incredibly strong individuals to be able to stand up and say that they are no longer willing to be there tormentors victims any longer. Jerry Sandusky had it all planned out. He started his abuse of Aaron subtly, as if he were testing Aaron to see if he would react negatively. The first day when Sandusky took Aaron and the other boys to the swimming pool and Aaron felt that he was holding his crotch a little too long was a test. Aaron dismissed the feeling that not right about it. l felt awkward but decided not to think about it (Fisher et al. , 2012, p. 19). Aaron also writes about how he felt awkward was when he started to ride up front in the car and Sandusky started to put his hand on Aarons thigh as he drove. : It is apparent that this situation also really confused Aaron. He felt that it was not a normal way for adults to display affection toward child, but he was also taught o respect adults, the rules they make, and what they say and do (Fisher et al. , 2012, p. 20). Jerry Sandusky knew exactly how to gain Aarons trust. As the world found out, he had practice, he had done this before, with other boys. He also know that Aaron was too young to know that what was happening to him was sexual abuse. Aaron was so confused when the abuse started, he didnt even know what to call what was happening to him. Aaron wrote, l remember when it all started and how I was Just confused. At the time, it had no name. But now I know it was sexual abuse (Fisher et al. , 2012, p. 21). Aarons psychologist Michael Gallium states that the way the Sandusky built things up with Aaron read like a blueprint for sexual abuse right from the start (Fisher et al. , 2012, p. 23). When the sexual abuse escalated, Aaron began to freeze up, to take himself somewhere else mentally. This is the exact same response that Jaycee Dugan exhibited when she was being sexual assaulted repeatedly by Philip Carried. This is the flight part of the flight-or-fight reaction to the situation. As Michael Gallium writes, despite all the adrenaline flowing, the victims find themselves unable to act (Fisher et al. 2012, p. 25). Aarons main coping skill was denial. Once Aaron finally realized that what Jerry was doing to him was wrong, he did not want to feel anything. Aaron told himself that nothing was going on. He kept his feelings of guilt, shame, disgust, and embarrassment all bottled up inside of him, until it eventually was too much for him to handle and he had to tell someone. He was fifteen when he finally told someone, so it was after years of abuse. It is also clear that Aaron felt very conflicted about how he was supposed to be feeling thankful for all the things Jerry Sandusky was doing for him, which was all part of Sandusky manipulation of Aaron. As time went on and the abuse grew worse, Aaron feared that no one would even believe him, when it started getting clearer that something really bad was going on, I was afraid no one would ever believe me (Fisher et. Al, 2012, p. 32). The sexual abuse Aaron was enduring affected him in several ways. Aaron struggled with what was happening from the first time Sandusky made his advances, he felt something wasnt right with the behavior of Jerry Sandusky. Aaron also had to keep himself in constant motion when he returned from the Sandusky home to help him cope with what has happening to IM. These activities kept himself from thinking about it, l needed to get away from all the questions that I was asking myself (Fisher et al. , 2012, p. 28). He spent time with his friends. He writes in detail about having fun snowboarding through a cemetery and Just feeling safe being with his friends and forgetting about what happened in Jerry basement. Aaron remember this time as, l felt safe that night, like my secret was tucked away; it felt good to know that in between the times with Jerry I could Just act like it never happened and wouldnt happen again (Fisher et al. 2012, p. 29). Then he got angry and started to act out. He yelled at his mom and used bad language, he stormed out the house, and he even started beating up his angry (Fisher et al. , 2012, p. 30). Then there was a point where Aaron basically said enough is enough, I dont care what is man has done for me, what he is doing is wrong, and I am going to stay away from him. He tried to stop seeing Sandusky, but Sandusky persisted, even coming to Aarons school and pulling out of class. It was like Aaron could not escape Jerry Sandusky. There are several missed chances to attach what Jerry Sandusky was doing to Aaron, from his mother, to Jerry wife Dotted, Aarons high school, Aarons doctor, the middle school psychologist. The bettering, the anger, not wanting to go with Jerry anymore, wanting to look up Jerry on the Means Law website were all worrisome signs that something was not right with Aaron. Aaron definitely holds some emotions about how the people close to him and to Jerry Sandusky should have known that something was wrong. Also, deep down, Aaron wonders if Jerry Sandusky wife, Dotted knew what was happening in the basement and that is why she never went down there why Aaron was over at their mom. He expressed these feelings as l started to believe that Serge wasnt coming down to the basement for the very reason that she knew. Somewhere deep inside me, I thought she had to know (Fisher et al. , 2012, p. 32). There is an Albert Einstein quote that reads, The world is a dangerous place, not because of those who do evil, but because of those who look on and do nothing. The people in powerful positions at Central Mountain High School completely let Aaron down. Jerry Sandusky was allowed to walk inside this school, ask to see a student, and was granted permission every time. It is hard to comprehend how this was allowed to happen in a school, a place of learning, somewhere students are supposed to feel safe. Aaron resorted to hiding in bathrooms when called out of class to see Sandusky, an action that was never questioned by school officials. Aaron not only feels angry but he feels that Mrs.. Probes, Mrs.. Smith, and especially Coach Steven Trachea let him down. Aaron writes, Jerry was the assistant volunteer coach for the football team, and I didnt even play football, so didnt Trachea wonder why Jerry was pulling me out of class? (Fisher et al. , 2012, p. 72). I question why the High School allowed Jerry Sandusky to take Aaron out of class on numerous occasions, to the point where he was missing so much classroom instruction that it adversely affected Aarons grades. Furthermore, the allegation that the school principle, Karen Probes, as well as the guidance counselor, Mrs.. Smith, didnt follow proper procedure when Aaron disclosed the abuse to them is outrageous. To tell a mother whose son Just disclosed that he had been sexual abused to go sleep on it and the Jerry Sandusky had a heart of gold is absurd. Those two are mandatory reporters, it doesnt matter who he perpetrator was, or if they believed the victim. It wasnt their Job to determine if Aaron was lying or not, it was their Job to report the abuse. It is understandable that Jerry Sandusky positioned himself so well in society helping young underprivileged boys through a charity that he started out of the kindness of his heart and everyone perceived him as he could do no wrong, but all that doesnt matter once a child accuses that person of something as horrible as sexual abuse. There are people that probably hold Aarons mother responsible, but was it her negligence that allowed this to happen? Should she have known something was amiss with the relationship of Jerry Sandusky and her son? I say yes and no. Yes, the sleepovers sleep over at a grown mans home is unusual. The frequency that this occurred would alarm me and as a mother I would have questioned it, no matter the social status of the man or family whom the child was staying with. I understand the perspective that this man presented himself so well as a supposed mentor and good role model that helped so many boys. I understand the misguided honor that came with such a pillar of society wanting to be involved in her childs life and the charade hat Jerry Sandusky saw potential in her child and only wanted to help. However, Jerry Sandusky was spending too much time with this child, time that should have spent with his mother. Aaron expressed anger about this, he writes about how he felt abandoned by his mother, and how mad he was that she let Jerry essentially take her place, doing things that she used to do with Aaron. This was a man everyone trusted. There were signs from Aaron that something was going on in her sons life, but she tried to take appropriate action. To her credit, she did take him to the doctor once the bettering started, but the doctor told her it was normal and never asked Aaron any questions about possible abuse. Also, when Aaron was thirteen and he started to act out in terms of yelling and hitting his mother and siblings, his mother did ask for him to be evaluated by the school psychologists who reported that he was just going through puberty. Aaron was trying to let the people around him, especially his mother, know what was going on without exactly saying he was being abused. Aaron acting out and being so angry, not wanting to go with Jerry anymore, hiding in he bathroom at school instead of going to see Jerry when he called Aaron out of class, and lastly when Aaron asked to look up Jerry Sandusky on the Means Law website were all cries for help that no one answered seemed to answer in Aarons eyes. However, Aaron was had several occasion available to him to admit what was happening to him, in which he denied sexual abuse, lied about what was bothering him, but he didnt tell because he Just physically and mentally couldnt. The best he could manage for a long period of times was to drop subtle hints. For a long time after Aaron had disclosed his abuse, he could not even say what happened to him beyond a simple yes or no. It was terribly hard to him to admit that sexual abuse had happened to him. No, it was not his mothers fault that she didnt know, and no it was not Aarons fault for not telling anyone. It is very unfortunate that the investigation into Jerry Sandusky took so long. Aaron was suffering the whole time. During the first year of the investigation, Aaron had met with four different state troopers, testified in front of his first secret grand Jury, and also met the senior deputy attorney general, Connell Cabbages. He had recounted his story several times to the proper authorities, but still no arrest was made which was frustrating not only to Aaron, but his mother Dawn and psychologist, Michael Gallium. Because so much time had passed and no arrest had been made, Aaron started to get extremely discouraged, anxious and depressed. He was made to testify in front of the grand jury for a second time, where he basically collapsed and showed signs of stress. Michael Gallium recalls Aarons reaction to having to testify, He was pale and perspiring. Once outside of the courtroom, he sank to the floor. He started to throw p (Fisher et al. , 2012, p. 130). The arrest of Jerry Sandusky had been promised several times by the attorney generals office, first in March 2010, then the summer of Aarons first meeting with Children and Youth Services. I cant image how Aaron was feeling through these years of waiting for Justice to be served, but you can feel the frustrations in the writing of Aaron, Dawn, and Michael. It understandable that this was a very large case, with many victims, and against someone in a celebrity-like status, but the Justice system could have done better for Aaron and the other victims. Children and Youth Services, the psychologist, Michael Gallium, intake officer Jessica Daydreams, and Director Gerald Rosalie were Aarons saviors. Michael Gallium was instrumental in helping Aaron to open up about the sexual abuse. He pulled up a chair, sat right next to him and told Aaron that he was on side. He asked if something sexual happened to him and who was the abuser, which was absolutely huge for Aaron that this person believed him from the start. That day, Aaron started to open up. He had so much passion for Aarons case and Just keep pushing for justice. He describes the impact of child sexual abuse on the victim as the sexual abuse of a child is emotional homicide. Child abuse murders the soul (Fisher et al. , 2012, p. 27). Lastly, like in Jaycees Dastards book, I am going to address the issue of why anyone would want to read a book on sexual abuse. I would guess that it would not be on the top of everyones reading list. It doesnt make you feel good when you read it. You actually feel horrible, sick, angry, and saddened, which are not emotions that are fun to feel. But Silent No More, like Jaycee Dastards book is important and reverse a great purpose, awareness. The victims of sexual abuse should never have to feel shame about what happened to them, they should be able to share their stories, as horrifying as they may be. It is also important because as we have learned, sexual abuse is not an uncommon occurrence and the world would like it to seem. We cant and shouldnt Just sweep it under the carpet because it is uncomfortable for us to fathom. There are more unreported cases of sexual abuse, then reported. If reading a book like this helps Just one person, then it was well worth writing about it. Aaron Fisher and Jaycee Dugan are two incredibly strong people. They both have chosen to no longer to be a victim. In conclusion, Aaron Fishers lived in a nightmare from the time he was eleven until Jerry Sandusky was convicted of sexual abuse eight long years later. He had made overcome so much in those eight years. From being so angry that no one around him saw what was happening, to the school officials not believing his story, to his three year wait for the arrest of his abuser. After he disclosed the abuse at fifteen, Aaron could barely talk about what happened to him. Now he wants to go on the road with his psychologist, Michael Gallium to talk to kids, parents, and teachers about sexual abuse. Aaron wants to inspire kids to have courage, l want to make sure that even the littlest kid has the courage to run away from an adult like Jerry (Fisher et al. , 2012, p. 208). He wants to go to college to study criminal Justice and become a state trooper. He wants to help and protect others. He is moving forward with his life. He ends his book with l am not a victim. The Schlieffen Plan and World War One

The Schlieffen Plan and World War One As the crisis which began World War One was developing from assassination, through calls of revenge round to paranoid imperial competition, Germany found itself facing the possibility of attacks from east and west at the same time. They had feared this for years, and their solution, which was soon put into action with German declarations of war against both France and Russia, was the Schlieffen Plan. Changing Heads of German Strategy In 1891, Count Alfred von Schlieffen became German Chief of Staff. He had succeeded the wholly successful General Hellmuth von Moltke, who together with Bismarck had won a series of short wars and created the new German Empire. Moltke feared a great European war might result if Russia and France allied against the new Germany, and decided to counter it by defending in the west against France, and attacking in the east to make small territorial gains from Russia. Bismarck aimed to prevent the international situation from ever reaching that point, by trying hard to keep France and Russia separated. However, Bismarck died, and Germanys diplomacy collapsed. Schlieffen was soon faced with the encirclement Germany feared when Russia and France allied, and he decided to draw up a new plan, one which would seek a decisive German victory on both fronts. The Schlieffen Plan The result was the Schlieffen Plan. This involved a rapid mobilization, and the bulk of the entire German army attacking through the western lowlands into northern France, where they would sweep round and attack Paris from behind its defences. France was assumed to be planning – and making – an attack into Alsace-Lorraine (which was accurate), and prone to surrendering if Paris fell (possibly not accurate). This entire operation was expected to take six weeks, at which point the war in the west would be won and Germany would then use its advanced railway system to move its army back to the east to meet the slowly mobilizing Russians. Russia could not be knocked out first, because their army could withdraw for miles deep into Russia if necessary. Despite this being a gamble of the highest order, it was the only real plan Germany had. It was fed by the vast paranoia in Germany that there had to be a reckoning between the German and Russian empires, a battle which should t ake place sooner, while Russia was relatively weak, and not later, when Russia might have modern railways, guns and more troops. There was, however, one major problem. The ‘plan’ was not operational, and wasn’t even really a plan, more a memorandum briefly describing a vague concept. Indeed, Schlieffen may even have written it just to persuade the government to increase the army, rather than believing it would ever be used. As a result their were problems: the plan required munitions in excess of what the German army had at that point, although they were developed in time for the war. It also required more troops on hand to attack than could be moved through the roads and railways of France. This problem was not solved, and the plan sat there, seemingly ready to use in the event of the great crisis people were expecting. Moltke Modifies the Plan Moltke’s nephew, also von Moltke, took over Schlieffen’s role in the early twentieth century. He wanted to be as great as his uncle, but was held back by not being anywhere near as skilled. He feared that Russia’s transport system had developed and they could mobilize quicker, so when working out how the plan would be run - a plan that was possibly never meant to be run but which he decided to use anyway - he altered it slightly to weaken the west and reinforce the east. However, he ignored the supply and other problems which had been left due to the vagueness of Schlieffen’s plan, and felt he had a solution. Schlieffen had, possibly accidentally, left a huge time bomb in Germany which Moltke had bought into the house. World War One When war looked likely in 1914, the Germans decided to put the Schlieffen Plan into effect, declaring war on France and attacking with multiple armies in the west, leaving one in the east. However, as the attack went ahead Moltke modified the plan even more by withdrawing more troops to the east. In addition, commanders on the ground also veered away from the design. The result was the Germans attacking Paris from the north, rather then from behind. The Germans were halted and pushed back at the Battle of the Marne, Moltke was considered to have failed and replaced in disgrace. A debate over whether the Schlieffen Plan would have worked if left alone began within moments and has continued ever since. No one then realised how little planning had gone into the original plan, and Moltke was vilified for having failed to use it properly, whereas its probably right to say he was always onto a loser with the plan, but he should be vilified for trying to use it at all.

Keasey, Thompson, and Wright (2005) noted â€Å"that the problem of diffuse ownership are absent as there is typically still a major ownership interest of the founders or their families† (p. 213). In this regard, corporate governance in private held firms failed to drive the need of change in such firms. On the other hand, management’s failure in private held firms to adopt corporate governance arises from the owners’ fears that some change amount to a usurpation of powers. In this case , accountability involves delegating and decentralizing operations and responsibilities, which some owners might interpret as a usurpation of powers and oppose any means to implement adoption of such routines. However, firms need external financing in order to expand their operations in the global economy. Therefore, the augmented need for external finances and funding make private held companies become more accountable to their financiers. In effect, since corporate reforms have a basis on accountability, private held firms implement corporate governance to ensure effective use of resources and more so the externally sourced finances. Feminist Perspective of John Steinbeck’s The Chrysanthemums Essay

A Feminist Perspective of John Steinbeck’s The Chrysanthemums   John Steinbeck, in his short story "The Chrysanthemums" depicts the trials of a woman attempting to gain power in a man's world. Elisa Allen tries to define the boundaries of her role as a woman in such a closed society. While her environment is portrayed as a tool for social repression, it is through nature in her garden where Elisa gains and shows off her power. As the story progresses, Elisa has trouble extending this power outside of the fence that surrounds her garden. In the end, Elisa learns but does not readily accept, that she possesses a feminine power weak for the time, not the masculine one she had tried so hard to achieve through its imitation. The work begins with a look at the story's setting. "The Chrysanthemums" was written in 1938, and the story takes place roughly around the same time. It is winter in Salinas Valley, California. The most prominent feature is the "gray-flannel fog" which hid the valley "from the rest of the world" (396). The mountains and valleys and sky and fog encapsulate everything inside as a "closed pot" (396). Inside this shut-off habitat the environment is trying to change. Just as the farmers are waiting for an unlikely rain, Elisa and all women   are hopeful for a change in their enclosed lives. Steinbeck’s   foreshadows, "It was a time of quiet and waiting" (396). The action of the story opens with Elisa Allen working in her garden. She is surrounded by a wire fence, which physically is there to protect her flowers from the farm animals. This barrier symbolizes her life; she is fenced in from the real world, from a man's world. It is a smaller, on-earth version of the environment in which they live. This man's... ...mean she couldn't still be strong. The peddler's business of selling his service of fixing pots closes women out of his world just as natural fog closes of the valley. Although we hope her tears can be compared to the pruning she does to her precious chrysanthemums, clipping them backed for future and stronger growth, Steinbeck leaves the reader questioning the future for women. Elisa's tears will not rid the valley of the fog, for as Steinbeck tells us in the beginning, "fog and rain do not go together" (396). While Elisa will continue to dominate her immediate surrounding inside the fence using her power from nature, but she will not gain power outside of it, in a man's world. Work Cited Steinbeck, John. Multiple Learning Styles Essay

More than one student in Kindergarten through College has complained of boring courses and tedious homework that had no discernible connection to their immediate environment. Many students describe their courses as lectures that force them to sit and listen to a professor for one to three hours, sometimes without a break in between. It is rare, or even unheard of, for a student to participate in a class-related activity that involved groups, going outside, discussions, or movement. The physical, social, emotional, and cognitive aspects of the classroom are not often addressed, leaving school a less safe and less stimulating environment (Sprenger, 2008). Not surprisingly, school is labeled as a stagnant place lacking in the stimulation of our senses. Students would rather be with friends, play a sport, master a hobby or skill, or even immerse themselves into fantastic games than go to school. Yet these same students appreciate learning new ideas, growing stronger, and having fun in a wide array of visual, audial, and kinesthetic activities. Shouldn’t public and private education use the best methods to impart history, math, science, language, and philosophy to younger generations? While there is no â€Å"best† method to accomplish this, I believe that using multiple learning styles to approach teaching and learning is more effective than using one style to accommodate multiple unique individuals. In its entirety, a learning style is â€Å"the complex manner in which, and conditions under which, learners most efï ¬ ciently and most effectively perceive, process, store, and recall what they are attempting to learn† (Lujan and DiCarlo, 2012). Most professionals and students have used three major learning styles to categorize themselves: Auditory, Visual, and Kinesthetic. These perspectives can be defined in simpler terms to be â€Å"hearing†, â€Å"seeing†, and â€Å"moving/doing†. In the 1980’s, a fourth category was added to differentiate â€Å"visual† and â€Å"read/write† learners, since people like Neil Fleming noticed that â€Å"some students had a distinct preference for the written word whilst others preferred symbolic information as in maps, diagrams, and charts (Fleming, 2006). As a result, the VARK questionnaire was created to identify an individual’s â€Å"preferences for particular modes of presentationâ₠¬  (Lujan and DiCarlo, 2012). Learning style dimensions are connected and related to one another, not â€Å"either/or† categories (Felder and Spurlin, 2005). Some people excel at interpreting locations on maps, while others would rather hear a location described; some would rather draw the map itself. Thus, if a teacher is monotonously lecturing a topic to sophomore students in college, some students will interpret and make connections with the information presented more easily than others. Those students that â€Å"learned less† or â€Å"slower† than other students in that example would have benefitted from other styles of teaching, such as a visual diagram of the information, a mind map, written bullet points, or physical interaction with the subject matter. Without this insight, flexibility, or desire, most teachers would remain unaware that the students who performed worse in their courses might have scored higher on tests or assignments if they had understood the class material from anot her perspective related to learning styles. The use of multiple learning styles outside of the classroom has even more important and practical implications that could lead to more effective problem solving, safety prevention, and innovations that would stimulate more than one sense. Signs on streets could be renovated to accommodate audibly-inclined (or deaf) people while driving their car: their eyes can focus on the road, while their ears would be notified (via radio-wave, for example) of changes in speed limits, lane rules, and traffic congestions. Medical students, who spend roughly two to six more years in school than other college graduates with a bachelor’s degree, would benefit from this in the classroom and during residencies. These future and current professionals are responsible for memorizing and utilizing a multitude of technologies, medications, and other holistic treatments that must be understood through scholarly research papers and on-site administration of those same procedures. How else would they do this without being taught and teaching this complex information via multiple learning styles? In an experiment done by Heidi Lujan and Stephen DiCarlo (2005), only 36.1% of their study’s sample preferred using a single learning style over multiple learning styles. Not only are models and demonstrations useful in imparting information, but peer-to-peer interactions and roleplaying can also foster a student’s ability to create connections between ideas. Some researchers categorize learning styles into eight components: Sensing or intuitive, visual or verbal, active or reflective, and sequential or global. This is also known as the Felder-Silverman Model (Felder & Spurlin, 2005). Each set of words are opposites to each other in terms of ways of interpreting information. According to the Index of Learning Styles (ILS), which adapts these eight ideas into a measureable tool, each of us is a mixture of each learning style, represented by a numerical gradient that connect each paired learning style to itself. When comparing the VARK questionnaire to the ILS, the latter seems to take the four modes in VARK and categorize them even further. However, the audial aspect of the VARK isn’t clearly synonymous to any set of categories in the ILS, but rather, it is a part of the ILS in its entirety. This might be due to the fact that each of us learns things using a unique combination of the VARK, so instead of separating major senses into a questionnaire, the ILS separates major preferences into an index. The accuracy of these tools is always questionable, even by Neil Fleming (2006), who says that the VARK should be used to create conversations that pertain to how each individual learns, and how those learning preferences connect to decisions made by those individuals. As our technological advances increase, teachers, students, and other people will find newer, cost-effective, and dynamic ways to impart and absorb new information (Solvie & Kloek, 2007). Positive uses of virtual reality and MRI’s can lead humans to understanding the way our brains send and receive information. Nano technology might eventually allow us to physically connect our brains to each other’s through the tiniest circuits. This eventual phenomenon will have the potential to collect our natur al resources, connect to each other, and commit to providing excellence in education, our professions, and our daily lives. It is imperative for banks to keep a close watch on the interest rate cycle: if rates are rising they have to ensure that their lending rates rise alongside or before the borrowing rate and vice versa. The premier position that Barclays enjoyed in the financial industry for over 3 centuries is a validation of the fact that it was built on the strong principles of finance. However, the last couple of decades have seen erosion in its reputation due to the breaching of those very principles. Barclays Bank is one of the biggest British multi-national banks headquartered in London with a market capitalisation of over 35.6 billion pounds. Their total book values of assets are 1312 billion pounds. The net income and profits are under pressure and have been declining for the past few years.
